Description:Gloucester Waterways Museum is urging county families to get involved in a colourful community craft project to help commemorate the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee.
Members of the Museum’s Boat Crafters’ Group are co-ordinating a project to produce a red, white and blue rag rug as part of the county’s Jubilee celebrations.
And they are hoping that Museum visitors will make their mark on the rug by bringing along their old clean red, white and blue T-shirts and use them to create strips of fabric for the rug.
Waterways’ families often lived hand to mouth and were very resourceful, recycling old clothes and materials to make rag rugs for children to sleep on and under.
Members of the Museum team will be on hand each weekend in the run up to the Diamond Jubilee to show people how they can take part in the community rag rug project.
The rag rug will be on the ground floor of the Museum between now and June for visitors to fill the hessian backed rug with strips of rag. Once completed, the rug will be displayed on one of the narrowboats moored at the museum.
Everyone who adds a strip of fabric to the rug will be asked to record their name in a special book which will be on display next to the rag rug itself.
Housed in a warehouse at the heart of Gloucester’s fine Victorian docks, Gloucester Waterways Museum tells the story of our wonderful canals and rivers. You can climb aboard historic boats, enjoy hands-on fun, watch archive films and browse galleries rich in canal heritage and stories.
