Alderman Knight School provides for pupils with a range of learning difficulties including autism, speech, language and communication difficulties and severe learning difficulties. A small proportion of pupils have moderate learning difficulties while the great majority of pupils have complex additional learning needs. The school has specialist status in the field of Communication and Interaction and a number of other awards including the Healthy Schools award. As the pupils move through the school, they follow a similar curriculum to that found in mainstream schools. In the last two years of their education pupils follow courses which can lead to qualifications on a variety of levels including GCSEs and entry level qualifications.

‘Learning and Achieving Together’

Alderman Knight School is a very successful and well-established special school for children aged 4 to 16 with moderate and additional learning difficulties, complex needs and Autistic Spectrum Disorders (ASD). The majority of these children live within the Tewkesbury and North Cotswolds area, but the school is also able to take pupils from outside the local area as need arises. The school has places for 114 children.

The school is a dynamic, vibrant, centre of excellence that is an integral part of the local community and county’s provision for pupils with special educational needs and is wholly committed to ensuring they grow up to lead safe, happy, healthy and successful lives.

The school aims to provide a supportive learning community that enables all children to thrive. To achieve this, the school ensures that:

Pupils are provided with an enriched and extended curriculum, tailored to individual needs. This curriculum will help them develop positive feelings of self-worth and confidence and will enable them to make a successful transition to adulthood and be active and responsible citizens.

Parents, carers and families are encouraged and enabled to engage in their children’s learning. They will be consulted and involved in decision-making processes and this will enable the school to ensure provision for all is accurately matched to need.

Staff have their individual needs recognised and will be helped to build on their strengths whilst enabling them to develop their skills further through appropriate professional development opportunities.

It works together with its local community of schools to extend the opportunities for all pupils to develop their individual strengths and potential.

Ofsted judged the school to be "Outstanding" in April 2014.

Describe any training or experience you/your staff, have had or are having in issues around SEND?

All staff receive comprehensive and on-going training to meet the needs of pupils at Alderman Knight School.

The five annual training days and weekly one hour curriculum, planning and assessment sessions, together with regular twilight INSETs are used to further extend staff knowledge and expertise and to work collectively on areas of whole school improvement.

All staff are provided with extensive professional development opportunities to extend and enhance their knowledge and understanding of pupils with autism, thus enabling the pupils to make outstanding progress with their academic learning and in the development of their personal and social skills.

Alderman Knight School works closely with the Gloucestershire Branch of the National Autistic Society. Both the Branch Officer and Deputy Branch Officer are full time staff at Alderman Knight. As a result, the programme of talks, meetings and activities are frequently held at Alderman Knight School. Places at all talks by the NAS are provided for Alderman Knight staff free of charge – the costs being met by the school CPD budget. This allows all staff to access on-going valuable learning opportunities to support the teaching of our pupils.

Teaching and support staff currently in school have undertaken a wide range of training/courses to support them in meeting the needs of pupils with Autism. Examples include:

  • Regular whole School INSET sessions – from conferences organised by Alderman Knight for all staff and its community focusing on Autism to twilight sessions and evening talks
  • TEACCH [1 and 3 day courses]
  • ASD – online training provided by the Local Authority Advisory Teaching service
  • ASD training for teaching assistants – Level 1 and 2
  • Specific modules focusing on Autism as part of SEN degrees
  • ASD and sensory related issues
  • ASD and Challenging behaviours
  • ABA training to support pupil transitioning into school
  • Engaging Children and Young People with complex needs
  • Yoga - Getting Ready to learn - programme for children with autism
  • Writing and sharing social stories
  • Total Communication - there is an on-going programme to ensure all staff are skilled up in using Total Communication (a form of signing) to support and enhance use of language.  This is done through 'directed time' on a weekly basis after school.  We have two staff with responsibility for leading this across the school.
