- Description
Ruardean Church of England Primary School is an inclusive school. Having a specialist Communication and Interaction Centre attached to the mainstream school, means that pupils in this school develop tolerance and acceptance. All pupils, including those with ‘Additional Needs’ are respected and valued members of our school community.
The Communication and Interaction Centre
The CIC is a specialist provision for pupils with autism and/or severe to profound communication difficulties. The CIC can take up to 10 pupils, from across the Forest of Dean. The CIC is staffed by a specialist teacher and 3 full-time specialist teaching assistants. Admission to the CIC is decided by the C&I Panel, which meets regularly throughout the year. A child must have a statement or be undergoing Statutory Assessment. Reports are required from an Educational Psychologist, Speech and Language Therapist and a C&I Advisory Teacher.
The CIC offers a structured teaching environment, an emphasis upon social skills, an emphasis upon stress and anxiety management, small step teaching where language and communication targets are integrated into daily planning, integration into mainstream as appropriate.

- How accessible is your service?
-
The school itself is on a split site. The early years and KS1 site is situated on a hill. This makes access with a wheelchair possible but due consideration needs to be given to this factor. There is a purpose built parking bay on the lane opposite the school gate to help with ease of access.
The KS2 site is situated across the lane. Whilst this area is more accessible, it is a large site and parking is situated approximately 200 metres down a slightly sloping path. There is a turning area nearer the buildings which can be used for dropping off and collecting by prior arrangement.
There is a fully equipped disabled toilet and shower in the Communication and Interaction Centre. There is ramp access to this building via the side entrance.
- Is the building fully wheelchair accessible?
- Yes
- Is there disabled changing and toilet facilities?
- Yes
- Describe any training or experience you/your staff, have had or are having in issues around SEND?
-
All of the staff have had training to at least level 1 in the Gloucestershire Autism training. Most have been trained to level 2. The SENDCO is level 3 trained and is the designated 'autism advocate'. The attached communication and interaction centre has 4 full time staff (1 teacher and 3 TAs) who are specialists in autism, and communication and interaction.
There has been a whole school focus on nurture and emotion coaching, with two members of staff being trained in 'Build to Express' lego therapy. One of the senior leaders and one of the TAs have recently undergone training in mental health first aid.
- Experience of working with children and young people with the following disabilities/additional needs.
- Alternative Communication
- Autistic Spectrum Disorders
- Complex Medical/Physical Needs
- Challenging Behaviours
- Please add any further information you feel may be of use for the SEND local offer.
