Walmore Hill Primary School

We are small friendly school, situated on the A48 between Westbury On Severn and Minsterworth. The school overlooks Walmore Common, which provides us with panoramic views.
Our school is well resourced and our newest installation is a Trim Trail overlooking the Common. We have two bright and engaging classes and a pre-school group that meets on our site called Bright Horizons.

Mrs Mel Davis has recently joined the school as Executive Head and we are forming good links with Woodside Primary School, where Mrs Davis has been Head Teacher for four years. Their recent Ofsted inspection showed good practice with outstanding features.

Visits to the school are warmly welcomed and we will be proud to show you around.

How will our school teach and support children with special educational needs?

All pupils have the entitlement to a broad, balanced and relevant curriculum. Pupils with SEN are taught, for most of the time, with their peers in mainstream classes by class teachers and study the curriculum appropriate for their age. All teaching and support staff work toward the principles of the National Curriculum Inclusion Statement and in their planning and teaching they strive to:

  • Provide suitable learning challenges
  • Meet the pupils’ diverse learning needs
  • Remove the barriers to learning and assessment

Walmore Hill Primary School values the contribution that every child and young person can make, and welcomes the diversity of culture, religion and intellectual style. The school seeks to raise the achievement, remove barriers to learning and increase physical and curricular access for all. All children and young people with SEND are valued, respected and equal members of the school. As such, provision for pupils with SEN is a matter for the school as a whole. All teachers are teachers of pupils with SEN.

With advice from, and the support of, the SENDco, teachers match the learning objectives to the needs and abilities of the pupils. They use a range of strategies to develop the pupils’ knowledge, understanding and skills. Where appropriate, materials are modified or support is provided to enable pupils with SEN to access the learning or the assessment processes. This may take the form of small group interventions, in-class support or additional support in tests and examinations.

It may be that a child needs intervention for other reasons, which may in turn affect the child’s ability to access the curriculum. For instance, a child may suffer from language delay; have fine or gross motor skills problems; or be suffering emotionally. If this is the case, the appropriate provision will be arranged by the class teacher or SENDCo to help the child overcome these barriers.

The school will decide upon the appropriate provision for a child, but is keen to discuss the needs of the child with all parties concerned, and importantly, the child themselves.
