Household Skills

Living independently is fun and exciting! But it also brings challenges that you aren’t necessarily prepared for.  It is never too early to start developing your skills for independence.  Shopping, cooking, cleaning, managing your money, all these things can take time to develop. This page is a starting point to get you thinking about those mundane but essential jobs around the house. These jobs can be fun too – cooking can be a pleasure as well as a chore. Tidying the house can improve your wellbeing and sense of pride. Don’t be afraid to get stuck in!
What can I already do around the house?

Even when you still live at home with your parents or carers, there are lots of things you can start to do. Not only will you be helping out, you’ll also be helping yourself for the future too. Things you can do around the house on your own initiative could be:

  • Putting out the bin and the recycling
  • Washing up
  • Loading or emptying the dishwasher
  • Hanging up wet laundry to dry
  • Sweeping and dusting
  • Keeping your room tidy
Cooking

If you’re not confident preparing meals, start out small. Making yourself a sandwich or salad involves no appliances and hardly any time. From there, ask to be shown how to use a toaster and kettle safely. Experiment with different ingredients and learn your favourite recipes. You might be surprised, you might start to enjoy it! Eventually, you can ask to start using the hob or oven. Remember to be safe and sensible when using sharp knives and hot appliances that use electricity or gas.

A clean and tidy place to live.
