Cirencester Deer Park School

I often ask parents and carers what they want for their children from a school. The answers can be distilled into three simple expectations, "I want my child to be safe, happy and successful."

Our aim here at Deer Park is to ensure that we meet these expectations and our mission, the reason we exist, is to enable everyone ‘to be the best we can be every day’.

When a pupil joins Deer Park they are welcomed by a dedicated Pastoral Team who, in non-teaching roles, ensure that our pupils are fully supported, so they can take advantage of all we have to offer. The Pastoral Team work closely with our Inclusion Team, our Special Educational Needs and Disabilities Team and our Teachers to ensure that our pupils not only feel safe, but happy and confident, so they are able to play a full role as the key members of our community.

We have designed a curriculum that gives pupils a rich and challenging experience, a broad and balanced body of knowledge and skills, allowing them to stand shoulder to shoulder with their peers and achieve things they may never have thought they were capable of achieving.

Our teachers deliver this curriculum as ambitious subject experts, so that pupils at Deer Park experience learning which is active and engaging, has depth and challenge, and sets them up with good habits for learning beyond the classroom.

Deer Park’s extra-curricular programme provides a huge range of exciting opportunities for pupils to enrich their experience of school; from the glaciers in Iceland to the smoke machines of the Talent Show, from bonding with other pupils in the Sports teams to supporting PE staff as Young Sports Leaders, from performing in a whole school Musical to being elected as one of the school’s Vice Presidents. These are just a few examples of what Deer Park offers its young people.

No matter the starting point of a pupil, our expectations of what they capable of are high and staff work tirelessly to help every pupil meet them. Deer Park is a wonderful place to learn and work. It is full of remarkable people being challenged to do remarkable things.

I am privileged to be the Headteacher of Cirencester Deer Park School and extremely proud of all that we do here, but don’t take my word for it, come and visit us and experience Deer Park for yourself. Whether you are a prospective pupil and family, or you would like to come and work with us or be part of our community, you will be warmly welcomed.

Description

We aim to challenge all pupils, including those with special educational needs, to achieve more than they first think is possible. Therefore, we ensure all pupils have their needs met and that they receive their entitlement to a broad, balanced and relevant curriculum that prepares them for life in modern Britain.

As a comprehensive school and an academy we aim to:

  • raise the aspirations of and expectations for all pupils with special educational needs;
  • enable pupils with special educational needs to achieve their full potential;
  • close the gap in attainment and progress of pupils with special educational needs and the attainment and progress of those pupils without special educational needs;
  • support all pupils with special educational needs so that they can become confident individuals and make successful transitions into adulthood, further education or training and employment

We provide support for pupils with a wide range of Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND) including those with:

  • Communication and interaction needs
    including pupils who have speech language and communication difficulties and autistic spectrum conditions;

  • Cognition and learning needs
    including pupils who have specific learning difficulties like dyslexia, dyspraxia and dyscalculia;

  • Social, emotional and mental health needs
    including pupils who have anxiety, or ADHD;

  • Sensory and/or physical needs
    including pupils who have visual or hearing needs, or a physical disability that affects their learning.

The School has a qualified SENCO who has extensive experience of working with pupils at Deer Park and in both mainstream college and special school settings. She is supported by our SEN Learning Leader.

As well as this, all teaching and pastoral staff are aware of the different kinds of special educational needs and receive advice on how to support these in the classroom. All new members of staff are trained on special education needs in a well-planned induction programme and teachers, though our Teacher CPD and in-service training sessions, receive regular updates on developments in special educational needs.

Other members of staff in our wider Care, Guidance and Support Team, including those in our Inclusion and Coaching Centres have participated in further training and achieved professional qualifications.

Where the needs of a pupil require expertise that is not available in the school, we use, via a traded services agreement, Gloucestershire Local Authority to provide access to professional services such as the Educational Psychologists (EP), Speech and Language Therapists (SALT), Occupational Therapy (OT) and Advisory Teachers on specific areas of special educational need. This is done in full consultation with parents.

Experience of working with children and young people with the following disabilities/additional needs.
  • Autistic Spectrum Disorders
  • Complex Medical/Physical Needs
  • Challenging Behaviours
