The HALT Project
- Local Offer
A unique part of the shelter’s education work, the HALT Project (Humans and Animals Learning Together) is an animal assisted intervention programme delivered throughout the academic year for young people in Gloucestershire.
It allows young people (aged 7-16) to attend varying courses hosted at the Shelter, ranging from 1 day experiences to a two week intensive course, designed to encourage growth in compassion, empathy, respect and responsibility.
We are an inclusive course, and attendees include young people with SEND, Behaviour that Challenges, low self-esteem or mental health conditions such as anxiety; many are not able to attend mainstream education.
During the course attendees are paired up with homeless dogs which they must care for and train; this not only helps the students sense of achievement, it can boost confidence and mood, and we are proud to lead the UK in this exciting initiative.
