Blakeney Primary School

  • Local Offer

Blakeney School is a small primary school, on a beautiful site. Currently there are 94 children on roll. We operate 4 teaching groups, each named after the classes in the Harry Potter series. Each class is supported by a TA.

We are very proud of our School's reputation within the local area for both ensuring that academic potential is fulfilled and for making a valuable contribution to the community.

We are working hard to develop what we do and we are undertaking some exciting new changes and projects. We are fully committed to doing the best for our children (from 4 to 11 years) and they are held as paramount in all our decisions. We have a team here and it is through that team pulling in the same direction that we will continue to create a place where exceptional education can be witnessed first hand.

Staff teach in a variety of ways, focussing on a Personalised Learning approach to our pupils’ development. We have a variety of ways to identify either individual or groups of pupil who need specific support. It is with this information that we can offer strategies to enhance learning.

However, it is the ethos of the school of which we are most proud. Our pupils are caring and thoughtful. They have a competitive edge, like all children, and want to succeed. Our staff pride themselves on being part of a team. The school really is a pleasure to work in.

Description

How will our school teach and support children with SEN caring for their overall well-being?

All children and young people with SEND are valued, respected and equal members of the school.  As such, provision for pupils with SEND is a matter for the school as a whole.  All teachers are teachers of pupils with SEN.  The governing body, Headteacher, SENCo and all other members of staff have important responsibilities to ensure access to the Curriculum.

All pupils have the entitlement to a broad, balanced and relevant curriculum. All pupils with SEND are taught for all/most of the week with their peers in mainstream classes by class/subject teachers and study the curriculum at the appropriate level for their ability. Pupils may sometimes be taught by a Teaching Assistant on an individual or small focus group to target more specific needs.

Teachers match the learning needs and abilities of the pupils, where needed with advice from and the support of the SENCo. They use a range of strategies to develop the pupils’ knowledge, understanding and skills. Where appropriate, materials are modified or support is provided to enable pupils with SEND to access the learning or the assessment processes.

Access to the Wider Curriculum:

In addition to the statutory curriculum the school provides a wide range of additional activities. All pupils with SEND are actively encouraged and supported to join in and benefit from these activities. The participation of pupils with SEND in these activities is monitored carefully.

Risk assessments are carried out and procedures are put in place to enable all children to participate.

However, if it is deemed that an intensive level of 1 to 1 support is required a parent or carer may be asked to accompany their child during the activity.

Describe any training or experience you/your staff, have had or are having in issues around SEND?

As a small school, our training is primarily needs lead. The SENCo at our federation is a Specialist Teacher and Assessor. She is a member of the Professional Association of Teachers for students with Specific Learning Difficulties and is studying for an MSc in Inclusive Education. She carries out regular training to ensure that the school is kept up to date with current SEND issues and provision.

We are very fortunate to have an experienced and skilled staff including a part-time intervention teacher Mrs Anne Hyatt who delivers support teaching to individuals and small focussed groups.

All staff have received some training related to SEND.These have included sessions on:

  • How to support pupils on the autistic spectrum.
  • How to support pupils with emotional needs.
